 1953(昭和28)年12月25日、奄美群島は日本に復帰しました。今年は60年の節目の年です。 復帰というと、沖縄のことと思われがちですが、奄美の島々も敗戦から8年間、アメリカの軍政下に置かれました。 1953(1953) The Amami archipelago returned to Japan on the age December 25.   •  奄美では軍政が始まった敗戦後1946年から、劇団の創設や新聞・雑誌の創刊などで文化活動が盛んになりました。例えば、劇団の数は奄美大島の名瀬市だけで20件近く上り、それぞれ独自の作品を披露しました。特に「熱風座」と呼ばれる劇団は、薩摩藩の圧政と住民の抵抗を描いた「犬田布騒動記」など地元の歴史を題材にした劇で人気を博しました。Cultural activities became active in Amami because of the foundation of the theatrical company and starting the newspaper and the magazine, etc. in 1946 after it had defeated it as the military administration started.For instance, the number of theatrical companies went up by about 20 only in Amami Oshima's Naze City, and announced an original work respectively.Theater company called "Netupuza" has gained popularity in the play that the theme of local history depicting the resistance of residents and tyranny of Satsuma clan, such as "Intabu fuss mentioned" in particular.
  •  新聞では南海日日新聞や奄美タイムスが創刊され、日本や国際情勢、地元の情報を伝える日刊紙として親しまれました。
    軍政下の閉ざされた中で人々は文化活動を通して奄美の今や将来を真剣に考えるようになりました。その動きは「赤土の文化活動」と呼ばれ、やがて復帰運動へとつながっていきます。

  •  1951(昭和26)年2月14日、名瀬市で官民の団体を結集した奄美大島日本復帰協議会が結成され、議長に泉芳朗さんが選ばれました。
    泉さんは、徳之島出身。教師で詩人。当時は奄美の社会民主党委員長でした。
    復帰協議会は翌日から満14歳以上の住民を対象に復帰の署名活動を行い、2カ月で99・8%の署名を集めました。  さらに市民大会や群民大会を開いて復帰の意志を集約し、日本の首相や国会、米国などに復帰の意志を伝えました。
    さらに、学生から大人まで断食(ハンスト)を行って、復帰をアピールしました。
     当時の奄美は食糧が不足し、今日のご飯にもありつけない人たちが多い時代でしたが、人々はあえて断食という自らに厳しい手法を選択して復帰の意志表示をしたのでした。

  •  こうした地元の動きに東京や大阪など全国の出身者も呼応し、1000万人署名や国会などへの要請活動を行いました。
    奄美の復帰運動は地元だけでなく出身者も一体となった無血の民族運動でした。
