03 Arasetsu - A Traditional Festival

The first Hinoe (day of fire in August of the old calendar) is called Arasetsu on Amami Oshima, and in an area known as Akina in Tatsugo town, a traditional ceremony that they call Shochogama is held early in the morning.

In preparation for this day, a thatched cottage known as a Shochogama is built on a small hill overlooking Tabukuro. Men climb this cottage before dawn on the day of the festival and shake it down to the ground while singing as the sun rises. A rich harvest can be expected the following year if it falls to the south.
From the evening of that day, women dressed in white robes playing roles as Noro priestesses on the seaside rocks sing, dance, and beckon the Inadama rice spirits from beyond the sea.
This is known as the Hirase Mankai. “Mankai” means “to beckon.”
When it is over, everyone performs the August Dance.
The Shochogama is male-centered mountain festival held early in the morning.
The Hirase Mankai is female-centered sea festival held in the evening.
These two festivals put together become the “Akina Arasetsu Rituals”.
They are designated important national intangible folk cultural assets.
The August Dance is performed until late at night on this day in a settlement located in northern Amami Oshima.
Men and women sing together and dance in a circle while a drum called the Chijin is beaten.
This is an old-fashioned performance where singing, instruments, and dancing all come together.
